Not only have I not got a mobile phone, I haven’t got a computer. I don’t employ any artificial intelligence of any kind. People say to me, ‘Oh, you should have a computer, they can do this, they can…’. I say, ‘I know how fuckin’ great they are, that’s why I, that’s the very reason I can’t have one.’ Y’know, oh, I’ll just watch a bit of Dion & The Belmonts, then I’ll go out. Oh, no, now what was that Elvis film? Oh, that reminds me, that Grace Kelly movie. I’ll just download this Marx Brothers clip. Y’know what I mean? I’d never get out of the fuckin’ house. I’d fuckin’ die. You’d find me dead with a pizza box, with me arse in the air and me pants round me ankles in front of a flickerin’ fuckin’ computer screen. ‘Oh, he never went out, we bought him that computer and he never went out again, never went through the fuckin’ door. The milk stopped bein’ delivered and he fuckin’ died.’

It never really occurred to me to believe in God – and I had nothing to rebel against, my parents told me nothing whatsoever. But I do remember looking at my headmaster delivering a sermon, a classicist, extremely clever… and thinking, he can’t really believe all that, can he? How incredible!

“[H]ow could someone like Prime Minister David Cameron even begin to understand a [working-class] community like Dewsbury Moor? […] He counts King William IV as an ancestor […]. His wife […] happens to be a descendant of King Charles II.”

“For an idea of just how disconnected Cameron is from the way the majority of us live, Dylan Jones’s Cameron on Cameron has him describe his wife’s upbringing as ‘highly unconventional’ – ‘because she went to a day school’.”

A few hours ago, I landed in Los Angeles, turned on my phone, and confirmed what you already know. Sony Pictures Television is replacing me as showrunner on Community, with two seasoned fellows that I’m sure are quite nice - actually, I have it on good authority they’re quite nice, because…

“That’s what I admire about youngish Italians, the slow diminution of ambition, the recognition that the best is far behind them. (An Italian Whitney Houston might have sung, “I believe the parents are our future.”) We Americans can learn a lot from their graceful decline.”
